Statement:
My 2004 series of paintings, drawings and sculptures all repeat fragmented and disconnected figures: multi mirror-like reflections stare at themselves, at each other or the viewer, as if pleading for affirmation. Here I work with a cold and bleak palette using white, grays, and blacks. Collectively, I want the figures to resemble popular icons — Charlie Brown, the Pillsbury Doughboy, or Munch's character from The Scream — I also deliberately keep them indistinct, generic and anonymous. The cartoon-like figures speak to me of our collective longing and weaknesses, where vanity becomes our downfall. Combining cuteness and anxious impotence, they become a pastiche of angst-ridden adulthood, a poignant reminder for me of our time.
A core issue for me is one of faith in the ability of contemporary art to communicate relevance and meaning amidst a rampant succession of pop icons and pop consumerism. Above all, my intention is to make work that stirs an inquiry into our soul and identity, which impacts our contemporary existence.
